It wouldn’t be a week in America without some sort of ridiculous controversy over New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; and sure enough, Ocasio-Cortez’s newest batch of merchandise has captured the attention of a select group of conservative pundits and outlets.
This isn’t the first time AOC has come under fire for something clothing-related; some took issue with her October Vanity Fair cover, for which she posed in expensive borrowed clothes, as is typical for a fashion shoot. This time, the sartorial controversy is even pettier; get all the details below:
What is the AOC merch in question?
The Congresswoman’s new line of merch includes shirts and hats that advertise the Green New Deal, encourage wearers to “Drink Water & Don’t Be Racist,” and—perhaps most controversially—a $58 sweatshirt reading “Tax the Rich.”
Who reacted negatively?
Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro, for one, who tweeted, “Only the rich can afford this idiotic sweatshirt.” The New York Post soon followed up with an article exclaiming, “Capitalism isn’t so bad after all!” (Because, of course, if you own or purchase any item of clothing over $5, you famously disagree with the principles of giving people healthcare and a livable wage.)
What was AOC’s response?
AOC responded in her inimitably brisk fashion, noting that her merch was union-made in the U.S. “Republicans are freaking out bc we don’t use slave-wage labor for merch that funds grassroots organizing,” she said, before joking that GOP members performing consternation over the price could easily get AOC T-shirts for free: “just volunteer.”
Republicans are freaking out bc we don’t use slave-wage labor for merch that funds grassroots organizing.
But what’s the difference between Trump’s merch and ours?
Ours is made in the US. 🇺🇸
